It seems like with these tariffs, Trump is trying to severe the United States' alliance with Canada. Canada is one of the US' biggest customers and will have to face this issue head-on as the Prime Minister has already imposed reciprocal tariffs on some imported American goods(aluminum and steel). In the words of Justin Trudeau during a news conference, Trump is a very smart guy but this is a very dumb thing to do.
